The accredited person who files a formal application for Maltese Citizenship by Investment must pay the due diligence fees, passport fees and other deposits. Within 90 days from application, Identity Malta must confirm the formal validity of the application package presented. At lastest within 120 days from application, and in principal approval is to be issued, confirming the applicant as eligible for Maltese citizenship subject to satisfying the remaining contribution, investment and property requirements within the applicable timeframes. The next steps are: the oath of allegiance and the issue of a certificate of naturalisation as well as issue of the relative passports. This may only take place at least six months from the application date, subject to the minimum of 1 year of satisfying the residence requirement.

Maltese Citizenship in itself is not a connecting factor for establishing the tax jurisdiction of Malta over the citizen in question. Tax jurisdiction is established on the basis of the residence and domicile of the subject. The Malta Citizenship by Investment Programme requires a minimum one year residence which inherently entails fiscal residence in this year of the applicant@s residence in Malta. The tax implications of Maltese Citizenship are therefore not to be ignored.
