Although there is no such thing as an EU passport, the terms is used to describe passports of countries that are members of the European Union. Citizens of individual countries in the EU enjoy the benefits of holders of a passport of any other EU state. An EU passport can be acquired by acquiring citizenship in an EU state and require a genuine connection with such EU state.

Maltese Citizenship in itself is not a connecting factor for establishing the tax jurisdiction of Malta over the citizen in question. Tax jurisdiction is established on the basis of the residence and domicile of the subject. The Malta Citizenship by Investment Programme requires a minimum one year residence which inherently entails fiscal residence in this year of the applicant's residence in Malta. The tax implications of Maltese Citizenship are therefore not to be ignored.
